About the 1989 Porsche 911

The 964-generation 911 Base represents Porsche's most significant evolution of the iconic sports car since its 1963 debut. Underneath the familiar silhouette lies 85% new engineering, including the first factory all-wheel-drive system (Carrera 4) and power steering. The naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six produces 247 horsepower, paired with either a 5-speed manual or Tiptronic automatic. While purists initially criticized the departure from the raw 911 formula, the 964 has gained serious collector respect as the bridge between classic air-cooled and modern 911s. The Carrera 2, introduced in 1990, offers traditional rear-wheel-drive dynamics with modern refinement. Production totaled roughly 63,000 units across all variants, making clean examples increasingly sought-after. Today's collectors appreciate the 964's analog character combined with improved reliability and daily usability, qualities that make it perhaps the most accessible entry point into serious air-cooled 911 ownership.
