Chevrolet launched the Camaro for 1967 as its entry in the pony car field. It came as a coupe or a convertible. The SS package debuted a 350-cubic-inch small block. Big-block 396 engines offered up to 375 horsepower. A Camaro paced the Indianapolis 500 in 1967 and again in 1969. Chevrolet built 69 COPO Camaros with the aluminum ZL-1 427.
The second generation began midyear in 1970 with a fastback design. The Camaro set its all-time sales record of 282,571 in 1979. A downsized third generation came for 1982, and Chevrolet's International Race of Champions sponsorship produced the IROC-Z package. The fourth-generation Z28 had a 275-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. A 1998 restyle brought the aluminum LS1. Chevrolet canceled the Camaro after 2002.
The Camaro returned for 2010 on a platform from Holden, GM's Australian subsidiary. The SS used a 426-horsepower 6.2-liter LS3, and the ZL1 had a supercharged 580 horsepower. The 2016 sixth generation offered engines from a 275-horse turbo four-cylinder to the 455-horse LT1. Its ZL1 made 650 horsepower.
Chevrolet announced in 2023 that the sixth generation would retire at the end of model year 2024. The last cars were built at Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan. Chevrolet said it was not announcing an immediate successor. The 2024 ZL1 Collector's Edition was limited to 350 units.
