Porsche unveiled the Boxster concept at the Detroit Motor Show in January 1993. Grant Larson was its exterior designer. The name combines boxer and roadster. The design drew on the 550 Spyder and the 718 RS 60. Series production of the 986 Boxster began in August 1996. Its 2.5-liter flat-six made 204 PS. In 1999 a 2.7-liter engine arrived with 220 PS, later 228 PS. Porsche unveiled the 3.2-liter Boxster S in the fall of 1999. The 987 followed in 2004 and the 981 in 2012.
The 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S premiered at the Geneva show in 2016. Both used turbocharged four-cylinder flat engines. The 718 Boxster had 2.0 liters and 300 hp. The 718 Boxster S had 2.5 liters and 350 hp.
By 2021 Porsche had built more than 357,000 Boxsters. That year it offered the Boxster 25 Years, limited to 1,250 units. It was based on the GTS 4.0 and made 400 PS.
Production of the 718 series ended in October 2025, after nearly three decades of the Boxster.
