Mercedes-Benz built ten W 194 racing cars. The W 194 won the 1952 Le Mans 24 Hours. Max Hoffman, the US importer, initiated a road version. Development of two sports-car models began in September 1953. The production 300 SL was presented in February 1954 at the International Motor Sports Show in New York. Its doors gave it the gullwing nickname. Its 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine made 215 hp. It was the first Mercedes-Benz series car with fuel injection. Sindelfingen built 1,400 from August 1954 to May 1957. The 190 SL launched alongside it in 1954. More than 25,000 190 SLs were made.

A 300 SL roadster was shown at the Geneva show in March 1957. A removable hardtop was offered from October 1958. Production of the 300 SL and 190 SL ceased on February 8, 1963. The W 113 was introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show with a concave removable hardtop. It ended in 1971 after 48,912 cars. The R 107 ran from 1971 to 1989. The 350 SL and 450 SL used V8 engines from the S-Class. The 560 SL of 1986 made 227 hp.

The R 129 was unveiled at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. It had an automatic pop-up roll bar. A 6.0-liter V12 topped the range. The R 230 arrived in 2001 with a Vario steel folding roof, a first for the SL. The R 231 was introduced for the SL's 60th birthday. Its body structure was aluminum. The R 232 Mercedes-AMG SL launched in 2021, and only AMG models are offered. The SL 63 S E Performance makes 805 hp.
