General Motors showed the Corvette at its Motorama, which opened January 17, 1953, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. Harley Earl's team began work on the two-seater in 1951. Myron Scott supplied the name. GM built 300 fiberglass-bodied cars in Flint, Michigan, in 1953. All were Polo White with a Sportsman Red interior. A 150-horsepower Blue Flame six and a two-speed automatic powered them. Production moved to St. Louis in 1954 and to Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1981.

A 265-cubic-inch V8 arrived in 1955. A 283-cubic-inch V8 with Rochester fuel injection was available in 1957 at 283 hp. The second generation began in 1963 with the Sting Ray, sold as a coupe and a convertible. The coupe's two-pane rear window lasted one year. A 396-cubic-inch big-block rated at 425 hp arrived in 1965. The 1968 redesign added T-top roof panels.

The fourth generation ran from 1984 to 1996. The 1990 ZR-1 had a DOHC V8 rated at 375 hp. The fifth generation, from 1997 to 2004, used a hydroformed chassis and LS-series aluminum V8s. The sixth generation began in 2005. Its Z06 had a hand-built 505-horse 427-cubic-inch V8. The ZR1 had a supercharged 638 hp LS9. The 2014 seventh generation started at 455 horsepower.

The eighth generation, the 2020 Corvette, is the first mid-engine production Corvette. GM revealed it July 18, 2019, in Tustin, California. Its 6.2-liter LT2 V8 makes 495 hp and 470 lb-ft. The 2025 ZR1 has a twin-turbo 5.5-liter LT7 V8 making 1,064 horsepower. GM calls that the most power ever from a factory Corvette. The ZR1X adds an electric drive unit for 1,250 combined hp. Bowling Green still builds the car.
