Ford introduced the original Bronco on August 11, 1965, as a 1966 model. It came as a U13 roadster, a U14 half-cab pickup and a U15 wagon. Hagerty says it was the first production 4x4 with coil spring front suspension. A six-cylinder was the only engine at launch. An optional 289 V8 followed in 1966. By 1973 only the wagon remained.

Bill Stroppe's factory-backed Broncos won the Baja 1000 in 1969. The second generation arrived for 1978 as a full-size model sharing parts with the F-Series. Retail deliveries of the 1978 Bronco totaled 82,343. The fifth generation was built on the ninth-generation F-Series platform and ended after 1996.

Ford found no place for a two-door full-size SUV in its 1997 lineup. It offered the four-door Expedition instead. Ford revived the Bronco as a sixth generation for 2021, in two-door and four-door bodies. The Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, builds it. The 2025 Bronco offers a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. The V6 is rated at up to 330 hp. The Raptor's 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 makes 418 hp.
