About the 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet
The 428 Cobra Jet represents Ford's most serious factory muscle car effort, born from the need to compete with Chrysler's 440 Six Pack and Chevy's L78. Introduced mid-1968, the 428 CJ packed a conservatively rated 335 horsepower, though actual output was closer to 400. The key was Ford's Ram Air induction system and aggressive cam timing that made this engine a true street terror. Available in both fastback and convertible Mustangs through 1970, the CJ could be optioned with the legendary Drag Pack, adding an oil cooler and 3.91 or 4.30 gears. Production numbers remain relatively low compared to lesser Mustangs, making clean examples increasingly valuable. The 1968½ models are particularly sought after as the inaugural year. Today's collectors prize original CJ cars for their authentic period performance credentials and distinctive shaker hood setup on Ram Air equipped models.
