About the 1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351
The Boss 351 represents Ford's final hurrah in the original muscle car era, arriving just as emissions regulations began strangling performance. Built for only one year, this Mustang packed the Cleveland 351 HO V8 producing 330 horsepower, though many believe the actual output was closer to 370. Ford's engineers borrowed heavily from Trans-Am racing, fitting a solid-lifter cam, four-bolt mains, and aggressive timing. The suspension received competition-grade components including a rear stabilizer bar, making it arguably the best-handling factory Mustang until the modern era. With just 1,806 examples produced, the Boss 351 is the rarest of the Boss Mustangs. Larry Shinoda's styling updates included a blackout hood, rear spoiler, and distinctive graphics package. Today, survivors command serious money at auction, with pristine examples breaking six figures. The Boss 351 perfectly captures the transition from the wild-west muscle car days to the more regulated 1970s.
