About the 1999 Porsche 911 GT3

The original 996 GT3 launched Porsche's modern track-focused 911 lineage, introducing the legendary Mezger engine to road cars for the first time since the 959. This naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six, derived from the 962 race car, produced 380 horsepower and revved to 7,800 rpm with mechanical precision. Pinky Lai's design incorporated functional aerodynamics including a fixed rear spoiler and deeper front air dam, while the stripped interior and roll cage mounting points signaled serious intent. As a homologation special for FIA GT3 racing, only essential equipment remained, creating a pure driving experience that modern GT3s struggle to match. Early examples suffered from rear main seal issues, but sorted cars now represent exceptional value. With air-cooled 911s reaching stratospheric prices, the 996 GT3 offers similar analog thrills at a fraction of the cost.
