Pontiac's bold attempt to revive the GTO nameplate arrived as a rebadged Holden Monaro from Australia, bringing legitimate muscle car credentials that purists initially dismissed. The 5.7L LS1 V8 delivered 350 horsepower in 2004, upgraded to the 6.0L LS2 producing 400 hp for 2005-2006. With near-perfect 52/48 weight distribution and independent rear suspension, it offered superior handling dynamics compared to its 1960s namesake. Only 40,808 examples were built across three model years before GM pulled the plug due to lukewarm sales and dealer resistance. Today's collectors increasingly appreciate the GTO's understated sleeper aesthetic, robust LS powertrain, and excellent build quality. Clean examples with manual transmissions command premium prices, as enthusiasts recognize this as perhaps the last true American muscle car before the retro revival era. The controversial styling that hurt initial sales now works in collectors' favor.
