About the 1997 Ferrari 550 GT1
The 550 GT1 was Prodrive's factory-backed return to Ferrari GT racing after a near-decade absence, built around the 550 Maranello's front-engine V12 layout at a time when GT racing had gone almost entirely mid-engine. Development began in 1997; Care Racing Development later commissioned a batch of twelve chassis from Prodrive in 2001, campaigning them in the FIA GT Championship and at Le Mans, where raw V12 power made the car a genuine threat to the McLaren F1 GTR and Porsche 911 GT1. Values reflect the rarity of a twelve-car works program: the ex-works chassis RM Sotheby's sold for $4.29M in Monterey 2020 traded at roughly twenty times a contemporary road-going 550 Maranello. Buyers should verify chassis-specific history closely, privateer conversions of standard 550 Maranellos exist and trade for a fraction of a genuine period works car.
