Ferrari launched the 550 Maranello to the press at the Nürburgring in 1996. It succeeded the F512M. After over two decades with a mid-engined model as the performance pinnacle, Ferrari returned to a front-mounted V12. Pininfarina drew the body. The 65-degree V12 displaced 5,474 cc and made 485 hp at 7,000 rpm. The 550 name comes from its 5.5 liters. The V12 drove through a six-speed transaxle.

On October 12, 1998, a 550 Maranello set production car speed records in Marysville, Ohio. It covered 100 km at an average speed of 304.1 km/h. In 1999 Ferrari built thirty-three "world record" examples. Unveiled at the Paris show in 2000, the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina marked the 70th anniversary of Pininfarina. Ferrari built just 448 numbered cars, the last leaving the factory in December 2001.

Ferrari produced the 550 Maranello between 1996 and 2001. Hagerty counts just shy of 3,100 coupes. Private teams built racing versions, most notably the Prodrive 550 GTS. The 575M Maranello launched in 2002 with its effective displacement raised from 5,500 to 5,750 cc. It was the first road-going Ferrari V12 with an F1-style gearbox.
