At the start of the new millennium, Porsche conducted market studies and decided to develop a four-door hatchback sedan. The name Panamera was inspired by the Mexican endurance race Carrera Panamericana. The first official appearance was on April 19, 2009. Porsche invited media to a press conference on the 94th floor of the World Financial Center in Shanghai. Porsche initially planned 20,000 units per year.

The first generation range covered 250 to 550 PS with gasoline, diesel and hybrid drives. The Panamera S Hybrid of 2011 had 380 PS. The Panamera S E-Hybrid followed with 416 PS. An Executive variant with extended wheelbase came with the 2013 facelift. Ten years after launch, Porsche had delivered more than 235,000 Panameras.

The second generation had its world premiere on June 28, 2016. A Sport Turismo body style joined the Gran Turismo from 2017. This generation was built entirely in Leipzig and used an eight-speed PDK.

The third generation was presented in Shanghai in November 2023. At launch the range had the Panamera, the Panamera 4 and the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid. The Turbo E-Hybrid combines a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine with an electric motor. The system delivers 680 PS.
