MG launched the MGB at the 1962 British International Motor Show at Earls Court. The first car came off the line in May 1962. Development began in 1958. Sid Enever devised the design and Don Hayter styled it, with help from Pininfarina. The engine was the MGA's B-series, stretched to 1,798 cc and paired with a four-speed manual transmission. About three in five went to America.
MG released the GT coupe in October 1965. Pininfarina reworked the roadster body, with a larger windshield, roof and tailgate hatch. In 1967 the engine gained a five-bearing crankshaft and the gearbox gained synchromesh on all ratios. The six-cylinder MGC also arrived in 1967. The Mk2 of 1970 brought a new front grille, and a chrome grille returned for 1973. The MGB GT V8 also arrived in 1973 with a 3.5-liter V8 making 137 bhp. Only 2,591 V8s were built.
Rubber bumpers came in 1974 to meet US crash-test regulations. The ride height rose by 1.5 inches to bring the bumpers to the legal height. The last important update came in 1977 with a new dashboard. The last MGB, a white roadster, left the line on October 22, 1980. The Abingdon works closed on October 24, 1980. The MGB had an 18-year production run and more than half a million were built.
