Lamborghini created the Gallardo in 2003 as a smaller, more practical model than its 12-cylinder cars. It was presented at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show. The shape began with a one-off design by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Italdesign. Lamborghini's Centro Stile, under Luc Donckerwolke, then developed the final shape.
The Gallardo was the first Lamborghini with a 10-cylinder engine. Its 5-liter V10 made 510 horsepower at the debut. The car launched with four-wheel drive, though Lamborghini also built rear-wheel-drive versions. Buyers could choose a 6-speed manual or the sequential E-gear.
The Gallardo Spyder was previewed by the Concept S at Geneva in 2005. It made its global debut at the Frankfurt motor show. The Superleggera followed in 2007 and the LP560-4 in 2008. The Valentino Balboni edition was rear-wheel drive. The LP570-4 Superleggera was unveiled ahead of the 2010 Geneva motor show. Power grew until the 5.2-liter engine produced 570 CV.
Production ended at the end of 2013 with more than 14,000 cars built. Lamborghini names the Huracán and Temerario as its descendants.
