Chrysler executive Bob Lutz started the idea of a modern Cobra, and Tom Gale's design team developed it. The concept debuted at the 1989 North American International Auto Show. Carroll Shelby paced the 1991 Indianapolis 500 in a pre-production Viper. Production of the RT/10 began in early 1992. Its 8.0-liter V-10 made 400 hp. The engine came from a Dodge Ram design, and Lamborghini, then owned by Chrysler, helped refine it.

The second generation, the GTS, arrived in 1996 with 450 hp. The third generation arrived in 2003 with an 8.3-liter V-10 rated at 500 hp. The fourth generation, the SRT-10 of 2008, used an 8.4-liter V-10 rated at 600 hp. Production stopped in 2010 because of Chrysler's financial difficulties.

The fifth generation returned in 2012 as the SRT Viper, with an 8.4-liter V-10 rated at 640 hp. It was rebranded as the Dodge Viper in 2015 and made 645 hp. The Viper ACR arrived in 2016.

Dodge ended Viper production on August 31, 2017, at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit. Builds had sold out by February 10, 2017. The Viper ran for 25 years.
