The BMW M5 began as a 5 Series sedan reworked by BMW Motorsport GmbH. The first M5, an E28, was produced from October 1984 to June 1988. It debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. Its M88/3 engine made 286 PS.
The E34 generation was unveiled in 1988 with a 3.6-liter six-cylinder. In 1992 BMW revised the car and raised the engine to 3.8 liters. A Touring wagon was also sold. The E39 arrived in 1998 with a V8 in place of the six. It made 400 bhp from 5.0 liters. The E60 used a 5.0-liter V10 with an 8,250 rpm rev limiter. That V10 won the Engine of the Year award in 2005 and 2006.
The F10 switched to a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 in 2011. The F90 was first revealed in 2017 as the first all-wheel-drive M5. Its V8 made 592 bhp. After 40 years, BMW announced the seventh generation in 2024. BMW states it is the first M5 with an electrified drive system. The M Hybrid system is rated at 717 hp.
