The BMW M5 E39 was built from 1998 to 2003.
The M5, the most traded version: The E39 M5 represents BMW M's finest hour—a perfect storm of naturally aspirated V8 fury and executive sedan refinement. Its hand-built 4.9-liter S62 V8 produces 394 horsepower, propelling this autobahn missile to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds while maintaining four-door practicality. Only available with a six-speed manual, it's the last of the analog M5s before electronic intervention took hold. BMW built just 20,482 worldwide, making clean examples increasingly coveted. The E39's timeless Chris Bangle-penned silhouette aged gracefully, while its chassis dynamics still shame modern sports sedans. Collectors prize low-mileage examples, particularly in Imola Red or Carbon Black, as values have steadily climbed. This generation bridged BMW's old-school ethos with modern performance, creating what many consider the greatest M5 ever built. Finding an unmolested example with service records is becoming the holy grail for serious BMW collectors.
