About the 2005 BMW M5

The E60 M5 represents BMW's most audacious M car experiment, a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V10 that screams to 8,250 rpm, borrowed directly from Formula One technology. With 500 horsepower and 384 lb-ft, this sedan could hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds while seating five in luxury. The S85 engine, shared with the E63 M6, required exotic materials and engineering that made it prohibitively expensive to develop today. BMW built just 20,548 examples worldwide, making it the rarest M5 generation. The SMG III transmission remains divisive, loved by purists for its race-bred character, criticized by others for daily driving. Values have climbed steadily as collectors recognize this as the end of an era, the last naturally aspirated M5 and arguably the most characterful. Rod bearing issues are well-documented but manageable with proper maintenance, making sorted examples increasingly desirable.
