Audi unveiled the Le Mans quattro concept at the 2003 International Motor Show. Its technical basis was the Lamborghini Gallardo. The production R8 had its world premiere at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. It used a 4.2-liter V8 FSI mounted behind the passenger compartment. The engine made 420 PS, later 430 PS. The former quattro GmbH, today Audi Sport GmbH, developed and built the car. The R8 name came from a race car. That prototype won at Le Mans in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005.
Audi introduced a 5.2-liter V10 in 2008. It came from the Lamborghini Gallardo. Audi removed the roof in 2009 to create the Spyder. The R8 GT Coupé and GT Spyder were limited to 333 units. The R8 LMX of 2014 was limited to 99 units and made 570 PS. Its laser high beams were a first for a production car.
Audi presented the second generation at the Geneva show in 2015. It drew its main features from the Lamborghini Huracán. The V10 came in 540 PS and 610 PS forms. The R8 V10 RWS was the first rear-wheel-only variant in Audi's history. A 570 PS V10 joined the range after the 2019 facelift. The all-wheel-drive R8 V10 Performance got 620 PS. The R8 V10 GT RWD was limited to 333 units. Audi built the final R8 at Böllinger Höfe on March 22, 2024.
