About the 1979 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 290GD
The 290 GD is a W461 utility G with a 2.9L five cylinder diesel. The naturally aspirated version makes 94 hp. It was sold from 1992 to 1997. A turbo version, sold from 1998 to 2001, makes more power and is a separate chase. Torque is 142 lb-ft. The W461 body is the plain, tough one used by militaries and work fleets. Collectors want original, unmodified examples with clear records. Look for frame rust, door seam rust and a smooth gearbox. Confirm which engine the car has, since the two versions look alike. Service records for the injection pump and the cooling system are worth more than a fresh coat of paint.
