Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch began cooperating on the G-Class in 1972. The model series 460 was presented in 1979 and built completely by hand at the Graz plant. It rode on a solid ladder-type frame with coil-sprung rigid axles and came in two wheelbases and five body variants. Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur won the passenger-car category of the 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally in a 280 GE. In 1985 the entire model series 460 received two differential locks as standard.
The W463 arrived in 1990 and stayed in production until 2018 with limited alterations. It brought a more luxurious interior and ever bigger engines. In 2002 AMG fitted a 6.3-liter V12. Mercedes and AMG approved a production run of 6x6 G-Wagens in 2013. The G 500 4x4² followed in 2015 and used portal axles from the 6x6.
The second-generation W463 was launched on January 14, 2018 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Mercedes-Benz had built 400,000 G-Classes by December 4, 2020. Production reached 500,000 units in April 2023. The electric G 580 with EQ Technology was introduced on April 24, 2024. Mercedes-Benz still sells the G-Class as a four-wheel drive luxury SUV.
