The Midget 1500 represented the final evolution of MG's smallest sports car, introducing Triumph's 1.5-liter Spitfire engine to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations. While the larger displacement improved torque and driveability, the change marked the end of the traditional A-series engine that had powered Midgets since 1961. These final Midgets featured the controversial black rubber bumpers mandated by US safety regulations, along with raised ride height that compromised the car's classic proportions. Despite these compromises, the 1500 offered the best performance of any production Midget, with improved acceleration and a genuine 100mph top speed. Today's collectors often view these as the most practical classic Midgets for regular use, though purists prefer earlier chrome-bumper examples. The 73,899 production run makes them relatively common among Midget variants.
