Sir John Black, chairman of Standard-Triumph, wanted a sports car to compete with Morgan. The resulting 20TS was shown in October 1952 at the London Motor Show. The redesigned TR2 was shown in March 1953 at the Geneva Motor Show. Its 2-liter four-cylinder engine came from the Standard Vanguard and made 90 horsepower. Motor magazine recorded 107 mph.
The TR3 followed in 1955 with a front grille and a more powerful engine. In October 1956 its front brakes changed from 10-inch drums to 11-inch discs. The TR4 of 1961 had a new body designed by Giovanni Michelotti. The TR4A of 1965 added independent rear suspension. In 1967 the line gained a 2.5-liter straight-six. The TR5 had Lucas fuel injection and made 150 horsepower. The US TR250 had two Stromberg carburetors.
The German coachbuilder Karmann restyled the front and rear ends for the TR6. The TR6 came to America for the 1969 model year and sold until 1976. The TR7 of 1974 was an all-new design. It had a unit body, a wedge shape, a four-cylinder engine and a live rear axle. The TR8, a V8 version with the Rover V8, was introduced in 1979. Production moved to Canley in 1978 and to Solihull in 1980. The last car was built on October 5, 1981.
