The first car to bear the Porsche name was built in Gmünd, Austria. On June 8, 1948 the 356 "No. 1" Roadster received its general operating permit. It had a tubular steel frame, an aluminum body, and a Volkswagen Beetle engine, transmission and front axle. The first coupe was completed in August 1948. In the series car the engine moved to the rear. Gmünd built 44 coupes and eight cabriolets before production in Austria ended in 1950. Porsche presented them at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 1949. Production then moved to Zuffenhausen, Germany, where the bodies were steel.

Max Hoffman advised Porsche that a lower-cost open-top version could sell well in the American market. The Speedster followed in late 1954, and 4,854 were built. The 356 A appeared in late 1955 with a curved windshield. Its engines grew from 1.5 to 1.6 liters. It was the first road-going Porsche offered with the Carrera four-cam engine.

Porsche presented the 356 B at the 1959 IAA in Frankfurt. The last version, the 356 C, replaced drum brakes with disc brakes. About 16,684 356 C cars were built. Production ended in 1965. Ferry Porsche had assumed he could sell around 500 cars, but just under 78,000 were built.
