The GT-R badge was first applied to the 1969 Skyline GT-R, a four-door car homologated for touring car racing. The R32 Skyline appeared in May 1989. Three months later the GT-R returned after a 16-year absence. Its engine was the RB26DETT, a 2.6-liter inline-six with twin turbos and 280 PS. The ATTESA E-TS system sent torque to all four wheels. The R32 recorded 29 victories and no defeats in the Japan Touring Car Championship from 1990 through 1993. The Australian press nicknamed it Godzilla.
The R33 Skyline GT-R went into production in 1995. It came with the upgraded ATTESA E-TS PRO system. The R33 and R34 refined the formula. Production of the last Skyline-based GT-R ended in 2002.
The R35 launched in 2007 as a standalone flagship model, no longer a derivative of the Skyline. Each hand-built VR38DETT 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 was assembled by one of nine Takumi master craftsmen. Power began at 480 bhp and peaked at 600 bhp in the NISMO models. The R35 set a 7min 38sec Nürburgring lap on debut in 2007 and 7min 08.679sec with the NISMO in 2013. The last R35, a Premium edition T-Spec in Midnight Purple, closed an 18-year production run of around 48,000 cars. Nissan says the end of R35 production does not mean the end of the GT-R badge.
