Mitsubishi introduced the Lancer Evolution in 1992. Engineers moved the engine and drivetrain of the larger Galant VR4 into the smaller Lancer chassis. It came as the GSR street car and the stripped-down RS. Group A rally rules required 2,500 production cars. They sold out within three days, and Mitsubishi made another 2,500. The Lancer Evolution was built from 1992 until 2016 in ten official versions.

Tommi Mäkinen drove the car to four consecutive WRC drivers' titles from 1996 to 1999. The Evolution IV used a twin-scroll turbocharger and made 280 PS. Its 4G63T engine was turned 180 degrees from its predecessor. Active Yaw Control split torque between the rear wheels. Mitsubishi won its first WRC manufacturers' title in 1998. In December 1999 came the Evolution VI Tommi Mäkinen Edition. The Evolution VII used the larger Lancer Cedia platform. Its biggest change was an active center differential.

Mitsubishi exported the Evolution VIII to the United States in 2003. The Evolution IX arrived in 2005 with MIVEC variable timing and 291 PS. The Evolution X was in production from 2007 to 2016. It replaced the iron-block 4G63T with the all-aluminum 4B11T. Buyers could pick a five-speed manual or a six-speed twin-clutch transmission. Mitsubishi ended the series in 2015 with a special Evo X Final Edition.
