The Thunderbird appeared in public in 1954 and went on sale as a 1955 model. It was a two-seat convertible. About 53,000 were sold in three years. The 1957 model was the last of the two-passenger design. Its 312-cubic-inch V8 was rated at 245 horsepower. The 1957 engine range ran from a 190-hp 272 to a 300-hp supercharged 312.
The 1958 Thunderbird had four seats. Robert McNamara chose four passengers for higher sales volume. The wheelbase grew from 102 to 113 inches. Ford built the unitized body at a new plant in Wixom, Michigan. The standard 352-cubic-inch V8 made 300 horsepower. Sales reached 92,843 in 1960. Hagerty credits the 1958 car with launching the personal luxury segment.
The 1967 model was the first body-on-frame Thunderbird. It added a four-door. The 1977 downsized car sold nearly a million over three years. The tenth generation, from 1989, was the longest-running at nine years. Ford ended the Thunderbird after 1997 as the market for big coupes faded.
Ford revived the name in 2002 with a two-seat model. About 68,000 buyers took one, well below Ford's projection. The last Thunderbird was built July 1, 2005, at Wixom Assembly Plant. No successor followed.
