The Chevy II debuted on September 29, 1961, as a 1962 model. The first generation was rushed to market under the name Chevy II. Nova was the top trim. Its engines were a 153-cubic-inch four and a 194-cubic-inch six. A Super Sport option first became available in 1963. Factory 283 small blocks arrived in 1964. The 327 joined the option list in 1965.
The Nova underwent a complete restyling in 1966. The L79 version of the 327 was rated at 350 hp. A new body arrived with the 1968 Nova. Two big-block engines were offered, rated at 350 hp and 375 hp. For 1969, the Chevy II name was dropped. All versions were sold as the Nova. The year 1970 was the last for the big-block Nova.
The 1975 Nova had all-new sheet metal. A 4.3-liter 262 V8 was new that year. The SS was last offered in 1976. Regular production ended on December 22, 1978. Chevrolet's new Citation took its place for 1980.
Chevrolet revived the Nova name for 1985. It was built at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California, on the body of the Toyota Sprinter. The first car rolled off the line in December 1984. Every Nova had a 1.6-liter engine. The first version made 74 hp. The 1988 Twin-Cam made 110 hp. The Nova ended after 1988, and the Geo Prizm followed.
