Chevrolet introduced the El Camino for the 1959 model year, two years after Ford launched the Ranchero. The first generation ran only through 1960. Chevrolet built 22,246 in 1959 and 14,163 in 1960, then dropped the model.

The El Camino returned for 1964 with bigger engines and higher trim levels. The third generation, 1968 to 1972, was based on the longer-wheelbase Chevelle sedan. The SS 396 launched in 1968. A few 1970 cars received the LS6 454, rated up to 450 hp. GMC sold a twin from 1971 to 1987 under two names, Sprint and Caballero.

The 1973 redesign matched the Chevelle line and produced the largest El Camino generation. The fifth and final generation covered 1978 to 1987. V6 engines were offered for the first time, and Oldsmobile diesels were optional from 1982 through 1984. After the 1984 model year, production moved to Mexico. Chevrolet ceased production after the 1987 model year.
