About the 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
The R230-generation SL represents Mercedes' bold reimagining of their flagship roadster, introducing the controversial yet innovative folding hardtop that would define the model for a decade. Built on an all-new platform, this SL ditched the traditional soft top for a complex Vario-roof system that transformed the car from coupe to convertible in 16 seconds. The base SL350 and SL500 models offered refined grand touring with the smooth M272 V6 and M113 V8 respectively, while the SL55 AMG brought supercharged fury with 493 horsepower. Despite initial reliability concerns with the roof mechanism, these have largely been sorted, making well-maintained examples increasingly attractive to collectors. The R230's distinctive styling, featuring the prominent grille and muscular haunches, has aged remarkably well.
