About the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette
The C5 Corvette marked Chevrolet's boldest reinvention since the original, introducing a completely new hydroformed frame, transaxle layout, and striking bodywork that finally looked worthy of its performance. The LS1's 345-405 horsepower pushed these cars into genuine supercar territory, while the new chassis delivered handling that could embarrass European exotics costing twice as much. Pop-up headlights gave way to fixed units, and the interior finally felt modern. The '97 launch was coupe-only, with the convertible arriving in '98 and the hardtop Z06 in 2001. Today, C5s represent exceptional value in the collector market, offering 90% of a modern Corvette's capability at a fraction of the cost. Clean examples are increasingly sought after, particularly Z06s and late-model coupes with the LS6. The C5 proved America could build a world-class sports car.
