The first-generation Pontiac Firebird arrived in February 1967 as GM's answer to the Mustang, sharing F-body bones with the Camaro but wearing distinctly Pontiac styling cues. The base model came with a 230-cubic-inch inline-six producing 165 horsepower, though most collectors gravitate toward V8-equipped examples. What sets early Firebirds apart is their unique front-end treatment with hidden headlights and that iconic split grille—pure Pontiac DNA that the Camaro couldn't match. The '67-'69 run represents the purest expression of the Firebird concept before emissions and safety regulations began diluting performance. Production totaled roughly 280,000 units across these three model years, making clean examples increasingly sought after. While Trans Ams command top dollar, well-preserved base models offer an accessible entry point into first-gen F-body ownership, especially convertible examples which represent just 15% of total production.
