Pontiac introduced the Firebird on February 23, 1967. The Chevrolet Camaro had arrived in September 1966, and the Firebird used the same F-body platform. The 1967 Firebird offered a 230-cubic-inch six-cylinder rated at 165 hp. The top engine was the Firebird 400, a 400-cubic-inch V-8 rated at 325 hp. Pontiac built 82,560 Firebirds in the first year.

Pontiac added the Trans Am performance and appearance package in March 1969. Only 697 Trans Ams were built that year. The second generation debuted in February 1970 as a 1970½ model and came only as a coupe. Pontiac built 155,736 Firebirds in 1977, the year the Trans Am appeared in Smokey and the Bandit. Output rose to 187,285 in 1978 and 211,454 in 1979.

The third generation arrived for 1982 with an aerodynamic redesign. In 1989 the 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am paced the Indianapolis 500. It used a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 rated at 250 hp. The convertible returned in 1991. The fourth generation ran from 1993 to 2002. The LT1 V-8 made 285 hp in 1996, and the WS6 package raised that to 305 hp. A 5.7-liter LS1 V-8 powered the car from 1998, and the 2002 WS6 option produced 325 hp.

In September 2001 GM said Camaro and Firebird production would end after the 2002 model year. The Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec plant had been the only builder of both cars since 1993. GM said demand in the sport segment fell 53 percent from 1990 to 2000. Firebird production ended in August 2002. Pontiac itself closed in 2010.
