Porsche introduced the 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S twenty years after the first Boxster made its debut. The 982 generation has been in production since 2016. The names pay homage to the mid-engine Porsche 718, a race winner in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A turbocharged flat-four replaced the flat-six, and it was used throughout the Boxster and Cayman lineup. The 718 Boxster made 300 horsepower from two liters. The 718 Boxster S made 350 horsepower from 2.5 liters. The new engines developed 35 more horsepower than those of the previous Boxster.
Porsche Motorsport added the 718 Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4 in 2019. Both used a 4.0-liter flat-six without turbos, rated at 420 PS (414 bhp). The only transmission was a six-speed manual. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS followed at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It was the first time the RS name was applied to the Cayman. Its flat-six made 500 PS (493 hp). It lapped the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 7:04.511, 23.6 seconds faster than the GT4.
Porsche set October 2025 as the end of production for the gasoline-powered Boxster and Cayman. Sales in Europe had already stopped in 2023 because of new cybersecurity regulations. Limited editions such as the Boxster RS Spyder and Cayman GT4 RS were to continue for a while longer. CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that electric Boxster and Cayman models were under development.
