Lamborghini unveiled the Aventador LP700-4 at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. It replaced the Murciélago as the brand's V12 flagship. The car was new from the ground up. It used a carbon fiber monocoque, pushrod suspension and four-wheel drive. A new 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 made 700 PS. It drove through a seven-speed single-clutch gearbox Lamborghini called ISR.

A Roadster followed. The LP750-4 Superveloce coupe arrived at Geneva in 2015, limited to 600 cars. The Aventador S of late 2016 added rear-wheel steering, a first for a series-production Lamborghini. The SVJ of 2018 set a Nürburgring production car lap record of 6:44.97. It was limited to 900 coupes. The LP780-4 Ultimae closed the line, capped at 350 coupes and 250 roadsters.

Production ended in September 2022. The last car was a light blue Ultimae Roadster sold to a buyer in Switzerland. Lamborghini built 11,465 Aventadors across eight models, more than all of its earlier V12 cars combined. It was the brand's last V12 without hybrid help. The Revuelto, a V12 plug-in hybrid shown in March 2023, replaced it.
