Jaguar launched the XK120 in 1948 as its first postwar sports car. William Lyons first intended it as a limited-production publicity exercise. Wally Hassan designed its 3.4-liter six-cylinder twin-cam engine, which made 160 bhp. The roadster was followed by a fixed-head coupe from 1951 and a drophead coupe from 1953. Aluminum alloy was used for the first 200 cars.
The XK120 gave way to the XK140 in 1954. The XK140 added rack and pinion steering, optional overdrive and more power, up to 190 bhp in standard form. The XK150 arrived in 1957 with a one-piece windshield. Dunlop disc brakes replaced the drums, the roadster followed in 1958, and a 3.8-liter engine became available from 1959.
Jaguar sold more than 12,000 XK120s, 9,000 XK140s and 9,400 XK150s. The racing XK120C, known as the C-Type, won outright at Le Mans in 1951 and 1953. The XK150 was the final iteration of the XK series. The E-Type arrived in 1961, and Jaguar laid the XK sub-brand to rest. It revived the XK name for a new GT model in 1996. A new aluminum-bodied XK ran from 2007 to 2014.
