Honda first showed the S2000 as the SSM concept at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show. The production car launched on April 15, 1999, to celebrate Honda's 50th anniversary. It was first introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year. Honda originally envisioned a limited-edition tribute to its 50th anniversary. Production was extended in response to customer demand and critical acclaim. The name comes from the two-liter displacement of the original engine.
The first generation, the AP1, used the F20C, a 2.0-liter inline-four. At its 1999 launch it offered the highest specific power output of any naturally aspirated engine in production. Honda rated it at 240 hp at 8,300 rpm, with a 9,000 rpm redline.
The AP2 arrived for 2004. Honda fitted a larger 2.2-liter engine rated at 240 horsepower at 7,800 rpm. It also added 17-inch wheels, revised suspension tuning and revised gear ratios. European cars kept the 2.0-liter engine throughout production.
Honda added the S2000 CR, a club racer-inspired trim, for the 2008 model year. Honda then announced that the 2009 model year would be the last. Cumulative worldwide sales then exceeded 110,000 across 64 countries. Europe received limited Ultimate Edition and GT Edition 100 versions to mark the end of production.
