Ferrari presented the 296 GTB in 2021. It was the first Ferrari road car with a six-cylinder engine. The 2,992 cc V6 has a 120-degree vee, with the turbochargers installed inside the vee. The V6 makes 663 cv. A rear electric motor adds 122 kW (167 cv), for a combined 830 cv. The plug-in hybrid system gives a range of 25 km in all-electric eDrive mode.

Ferrari had built V6 engines before. The first, a 65-degree unit, debuted on the 1957 Dino 156 F2 single-seater. The 296 name combines the engine's displacement and its number of cylinders. The 296 GTS followed in 2022 with a retractable hard top. Ferrari calls it the first road-going Ferrari spider with a V6.

The 296 Speciale is a special series based on the 296 GTB. Its V6 makes 700 cv, 37 more than the GTB engine. Combined output is 880 hp, which Ferrari calls a record for a rear-wheel-drive production Ferrari. Ferrari reports a total weight reduction of 60 kg. The 296 Speciale A adds a retractable hardtop to the same formula.
