Cadillac introduced the Eldorado for 1953. It began as one of the 1952 General Motors Motorama dream cars. The 1953 car was essentially a Series 62 convertible with a reshaped body and a wraparound windshield. Its 331 cubic inch V-8 was rated at 210 bhp. Cadillac built 532 Eldorados that year. Dwight Eisenhower rode in the first production car in his January 1953 inaugural parade. Cadillac says the tail fin was inspired by the Lockheed P-38. The 1959 Eldorado Biarritz carried it.
The 1967 Eldorado switched from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive. It was a version of the 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. Cadillac adapted its 429 cubic inch V-8 for front drive. The engine grew to 472 cubic inches for 1968 and 500 cubic inches for 1970. The second generation arrived for 1971. The coupe was reborn in 1979 as a much smaller car. The Eldorado shrank again for 1986.
The Eldorado was redesigned for 1992. It was 11 inches longer and 3 inches wider than the 1991 model. The Northstar V8 was not ready until 1993. The final Eldorado rolled off the line on April 22, 2002, at the Lansing Craft Center in Michigan. It was the last of 1,596 Collector Series cars. That total was three times the 532 Eldorados built in 1953.
