Bentley showed a Continental GT prototype at the 2002 Paris show. The production car followed at Geneva in 2003. Bentley calls it the first all-new Bentley of its modern era. It was also the first Bentley with all-wheel drive and the first with the W12 engine. The 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 made 550 bhp. Bentley quoted a top speed in excess of 190 mph and 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. Bentley's annual sales rose from about 1,000 to over 10,000 within four years.

The second generation was unveiled in Paris in 2010. A 4.0-liter V8 option arrived in 2012. The third generation launched in 2018. It shared a platform with the Panamera. Bentley scheduled W12 assembly to end in April 2024. The W12 was Bentley's last 12-cylinder engine.

The fourth-generation Continental GT uses the Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain. A 4.0-liter V8 and an electric motor make 782 PS and 1,000 Nm. The V8 makes 600 hp and the electric motor 190 hp. The battery holds 25.9 kWh. The car has 50 miles of electric-only range. Almost 100,000 Continental GTs have been built in Crewe. One in three Bentleys sold is a Continental GT.
