The Continental R marked Bentley's bold return to bespoke coachbuilding after decades under Rolls-Royce's shadow. Launched in 1991, this hand-built grand tourer featured dramatic John Heffernan styling that broke decisively from the shared Silver Spirit platform aesthetic. The 6.75-liter turbocharged V8 delivered effortless performance befitting its £180,000 price tag, making it the most expensive production Bentley of its era. Only 1,388 examples were crafted over eleven years, with each requiring 320 hours of hand-finishing at Crewe. The R's muscular proportions and distinctive rear haunches established the design DNA for modern Bentley coupes. Early Turbo R-based cars from 1991-1994 are particularly sought after for their purity, while later examples benefit from improved refinement.
