About the 1991 Audi S4

The original S4 represents Audi's first serious attempt at a high-performance sedan, launching the legendary S-line that continues today. Built from 1991-1994 as the C4 generation, it packed a hand-built 2.2-liter turbocharged five-cylinder producing 227 horsepower, serious power for the early '90s. The distinctive flared wheel arches, Recaro sport seats, and quattro all-wheel drive made it a sleeper that could embarrass BMWs and Mercedes on both autobahn and track. Only around 6,000 were produced globally, with fewer than 1,200 reaching the US market. The B5 S4 (1997-2002) switched to a twin-turbo V6 but lost some of the original's raw character. Today, clean C4 S4s are increasingly sought after by enthusiasts who appreciate their rarity and that unmistakable five-cylinder soundtrack. Values have been climbing steadily as collectors recognize these as the genesis of Audi's performance legacy.
