The original Audi S4 was built from 1991 until 1994. It was a performance version of the Audi 100 sedan. A single turbocharged 2.2-liter inline five-cylinder engine powered it. RAC lists 227 bhp. All later S4s have been based on the Audi A4, beginning with the B5 in 1997.
The B5 S4 used a twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6. RAC lists 265 bhp. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-liter V8. RAC lists 344 bhp for the V8 S4 that reached UK dealers in October 2002.
The B8 arrived for 2010. Its V8 was replaced by a supercharged, direct-injection 3.0-liter V6 making 333 hp. The B9 generation uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. Car and Driver lists 349 hp with an eight-speed automatic and Quattro all-wheel drive. In Europe the facelifted B9 S4 launched in 2019 with a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6 rated at 347 PS.
Car and Driver reported that Audi is consolidating its A4/S4 and A5/S5 lineups. The new S5 sedan has a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with 362 horsepower.
