About the 1974 Jaguar XJ

The Series II XJ represents Jaguar's refinement of their groundbreaking luxury sedan formula. Following the original XJ6's 1968 debut, the '74-'79 models addressed early teething issues while maintaining Sir William Lyons' stunning proportions. The raised front bumper and revised grille are telltale visual cues, but the real improvements lay beneath. Jaguar's silky 4.2-liter inline-six delivered 170hp through either a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic, propelling the XJ to 60mph in under 9 seconds, impressive for a luxury barge. Build quality notably improved over Series I cars, though Lucas electrical gremlins remained a concern. Today's collectors prize well-maintained examples, particularly rare manual transmission cars. The Series II bridges classic Jaguar elegance with improved reliability, making it more usable than earlier XJs while retaining that unmistakable British character that made these cars automotive royalty.
