Jaguar launched the XJ6 in September 1968. Its project code name was XJ4. The 4.2-liter XK six made 245 bhp and reached 124 mph. In 1972 the XJ12 added a twelve-cylinder engine. Series 1 production ended in 1973 at 98,527 cars of all models, Daimler versions included.
By 1977 Jaguar needed to refresh the XJ. For the first time in its history, Jaguar used an outside styling house, Pininfarina, to redesign the structure. The result was the Series 3. The six-cylinder XJ6 Series 3 stayed in production until 1987. The V12 Jaguar ran until 1991 and the Daimler Double Six until 1992. Nearly three quarters of a million XJs had been produced by then.
Jaguar built its first production V8 engine, the AJ-V8, for the XK8 in 1996. The X308 XJ received it in 1997. The X350 was Jaguar's first production venture into aluminum construction. The X351 was introduced in 2009. It offered a 3.0-liter diesel or 5.0-liter gasoline engines.
Production of the XJ ended at Castle Bromwich in 2019. Jaguar counted eight generations of production across five decades.
