The original Dodge Challenger arrived fashionably late to the pony car party in 1970, but made up for lost time with the most diverse engine lineup in the segment. Built on Chrysler's E-body platform alongside the Plymouth 'Cuda, the Challenger offered everything from a sensible 225 slant-six to the legendary 426 Hemi and 440 Six Pack mills. The base models, typically equipped with the 318 or 340 small-blocks, represent the entry point into E-body ownership today. While R/T and T/A variants command premium prices, clean base Challengers have become increasingly sought after as affordable alternatives to six-figure muscle cars. The 1970-71 models are most desirable, with their aggressive shaker hoods and pre-emissions tuning. Production ended after 1974 as changing regulations and fuel crises killed the original muscle car era. Today, any surviving first-generation Challenger represents a piece of Mopar's golden age.
