Dodge introduced the Challenger in the fall of 1969 as a 1970 model. It shared its unibody platform with the restyled Plymouth Barracuda. Engines ranged from the Slant Six to the 426 Hemi V-8, rated at 425 hp. The 440 Six Pack was rated at 390 hp. Chrysler built 13,796 Challenger R/T hardtop coupes in the 1970 model year. The Challenger was phased out after five model years.
The name returned for 1978 on a different kind of car. This Challenger was a compact coupe based on the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda, with a 99-inch wheelbase. Buyers chose a 1.6-liter or 2.6-liter four-cylinder engine, both with Mitsubishi's Silent Shaft balancer system. Plymouth sold the same car as the Sapporo. Combined annual sales averaged 25,000 to 30,000 units. The second-generation Challenger ran through the 1983 model year.
Dodge showed the new Challenger at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2008. The 2008 car came with one engine, a 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 rated at 425 hp. It listed at $37,995, and dealers had already sold 9,000 units. The 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat made 707 hp and 650 lb-ft from a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8. It was the first supercharged Hemi V-8 produced by Dodge.
Dodge ended the HEMI-powered Challenger and Charger at the end of 2023. It marked the finish with Last Call special editions. The last was the Challenger SRT Demon 170. It made 1,025 hp on E85 fuel. Its NHRA-certified quarter-mile time was 8.91 seconds.
