About the 1967 Mazda Cosmo Sport
The Cosmo Sport holds legendary status as the world's first production rotary-powered car, beating NSU's Ro 80 to market by months. This technological tour de force introduced Mazda's Wankel engine to the world, with the twin-rotor 10A producing a smooth 110 hp that felt more powerful than the numbers suggested. Only 1,519 examples were built during its five-year run, making it extraordinarily rare today. The flowing, almost spacecraft-like design perfectly captured the space-age optimism of the late 1960s. Beyond its historical significance, the Cosmo established Mazda's rotary expertise that would culminate in the RX-7 and racing dominance at Le Mans. Surviving examples are highly sought after in Japan and increasingly recognized globally as a pivotal moment in automotive history. Values continue climbing as collectors appreciate its groundbreaking technology and stunning rarity.
