Work on the Toyota MR2 began in 1980. The name comes from Midship Runabout 2-seater. Toyota showed the SV-3 concept in 1983, and the car was in production a year later. At launch a Japan-only model with an 83 bhp 1.5-liter engine was known as the AW10. The rest of the world received the AW11 with the 1.6-liter 4A-GE engine. Toyota also offered a supercharged 4A-GZE with 145 bhp for Japan. A T-bar roof model was added in October 1985. The first generation had a total production run of 166,104.
The SW20 was sold new starting in 1990, and Toyota built it until 1999. The MR2 Turbo used a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter 3S-GTE four-cylinder with 200 hp and 200 pound-feet of torque. The Japanese-market Turbo was eventually tuned to 242 hp. Toyota revised the suspension and added wider tires for the 1993 model year. Racing driver Dan Gurney helped Toyota engineers fine-tune the handling of the first two generations.
The third generation was sold in Japan as the MR-S, starting in 1999. It reached North American showrooms in 2000 as the MR2 Spyder, with 138 hp. A clutchless Sequential Manual Transmission arrived in 2002. A facelift and an extra gear followed in 2003. A limited slip differential was added for the 2004 model year. In total, 27,941 Spyders reached North America.
Toyota ended MR-S production at the end of July 2007. A final V Edition limited-run model went on sale in January 2007.
